Cheshire is renowned for its picturesque countryside, stunning landscapes, and rich equestrian heritage. Find out more…

Equestrian pursuits have deep roots in Cheshire, and the region is home to a host of equestrian centres, riding schools, and competition venues. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a novice looking to explore the world of horse riding, Cheshire has something to offer for everyone.

One of the standout features of the equestrian scene in Cheshire is the variety of riding opportunities available. From leisurely hacks through the picturesque countryside at Delamere Forest to high-level show jumping and dressage competitions like Bolesworth International, Cheshire caters to a whole range of the equestrian community. Riders can find top-notch facilities like Kelsall Hill Equestrian Centre and expert instruction to further their skills and enjoy their passion for horses with venues often hosting events, clinics, and social gatherings. And there’s also the stunning natural beauty of the county to explore, utilising the bridleways, country lanes, and extensive trail networks that wind through the region’s rolling hills.

For those interested in competitive riding, Cheshire offers an array of prestigious equestrian events and shows, the pinnacle of which is the annual Bolesworth International that will host both CS13* and CSI4* showjumping competitions in 2025 (27 June to 6 July) attracting riders from around the world and offering a truly luxurious backdrop and setting for spectators to soak up the atmosphere.

Cheshire is also home to the thrills and spills of steeplechase. With point to points at Tabley House from November to June. The sport of point-to-point racing, or pointing as it is also known, dates back to 1836 when hunting men used to race their horses from church steeple to church steeple — hence the name “point-to-point”. It is an amateur sport in which many of the leading jump jockeys and national hunt trainers have developed their skills over three miles and a minimum number of 18 fences. It’s a great day out for all the family.

And that’s without mentioning the country’s oldest racecourse in the heart of Chester. Established in 1539 Chester Racecourse on the Roodee is home to the Boodles May Festival and a whole season of flat fixtures and historic races, with a great array of hospitality to indulge in, to suit all budgets.

There’s also the prestigious Cheshire Polo Club, with five playing fields and a packed season of fixtures. It’s a must-visit for passionate enthusiasts and beginners alike, and offers a laid back approach from a picnic in the car boot to full hospitality, not forgetting the spectator involvement at half-time with the stomping of the divots.

With such an equestrian heritage it make sense that some of the most impressive and well-reknowned horse yards in the country reside in the region. From Donald McCain (son of Ginger McCain trainer of the legendary Red Rum) to Michael Owen’s Manor House Stables and from Greenall Guerriero at Stockton Hall to Peel Bloodstock & Stud the list is impressive.

Whether you’re a dedicated equestrian, avid spectator or simply someone who is interested in discovering more about our equine friends, Cheshire’s equestrian community spirit offers inspiration to everyone. There’s no better time to visit us in Cheshire, a haven for all things equestrian.

If you’re looking for things to do near Malpas, then you’re in for a treat.

Malpas is a charming village situated in the beautiful Cheshire countryside, known for its rich agricultural heritage and traditional market town atmosphere. Set in picturesque countryside, Malpas offers a tranquil and idyllic setting from which to explore Cheshire, Shropshire and North Wales.

The village has retained its medieval street pattern, home to several historic landmarks and fabulous black and white houses, as well as the stunning St. Oswald’s Church with a super bossed ceiling and original Flemish window panels, dating back to the 14th century. It stands as a testament to the village’s rich history, high on the hill.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, history buff, or foodie, Malpas and its surrounding areas have something for everyone.

Explore the Sandstone Trail:

The Sandstone Trail is a popular hiking route that spans across the Cheshire countryside from Frodsham to Whitchurch. It stretches 34 miles along Cheshire’s Sandstone Ridge and offers breathtaking views of the landscape. What’s more it can be broken up into shorter trails to suit and is suitable for both casual walkers and seasoned hikers.

Visit Cholmondeley Castle Gardens:

Just a short drive from Malpas, Cholmondeley Castle Gardens is a must-see attraction for nature lovers. The stunning gardens are home to a diverse collection of flora and fauna, along with a romantic Temple and Folly Water Gardens, glades, arboretum, and ornamental woodlands, not forgetting the newly planted Cholmondelely Rose Garden with over 800 new plantings creating two connected Rose Rooms.

Discover some history:

History enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Beeston Castle, which is perched high on a rocky crag and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. (On clear days you can see all the way from The Pennines to the Welsh mountains.) The castle has a rich 4,000 year history, a replica Bronze Age roundhouse and 40-acre woodland park providing a fascinating glimpse into the past.

For avid historic home enthusiasts (those with a few more walls!) then Combermere Abbey offers a range of personally led tours for couples, individuals and small groups sharing the remarkable role that the Abbey has played in history as well as its 25 year restoration.

Indulge in local cuisine:

After a day of exploring, unwind at one of the quintessential British pubs in the area and sample delicious local dishes and experience the warm hospitality of the village. There’s one or two we can recommend!

The area is home to a host of amazing local suppliers too, so head to one of our favourite Farm Shops to take home some of the finest produce. For cheese it has to be Mrs Bourne’s The Littlest Farm Shop; then there’s Cholmondeley and Malpas Farm Shop for butchery and other fresh produce.

Visting Malpas, also means that you have the opportunity to visit our local suppliers that you sample when you stay with us; from Three Wrens Gin, where you can go on a distillery tour or make your own to the award-winning Weetwood Breweries and the reduced calorie Bach 95.

Run and swim wild:

With magical treehouses and characters straight from the imagination, BeWILDerwood is a huge woodland full of family fun and just minutes from Malpas. It guarantees memory-making for all the family.

And if water is your thing, then Alderford Lake has open-water swimming, paddlesport hire and aquapark. Or for a more leisurely afternoon on the water head to Whitchurch Marina and travel the canals in style with day boat hire.

Get a round in:

Cheshire has a wide range of golf courses to suit all abilities, and Malpas is at the centre of it all, making it the perfect destination for your golf adventure. Check out our top courses.

Attend local events:

Keep an eye out for local events and festivals taking place in and around Malpas. From agricultural shows to village fairs, there’s always something happening that showcases the vibrant community spirit of the area; check out our guide to events this Summer.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, the area near Malpas has plenty to offer. So, pack your bags and get ready to explore this hidden gem in the heart of Cheshire.

Cheshire offers a wide range of golf courses to suit all abilities, making it the perfect destination for your next golf adventure.

Delamere Forest Golf Course

Founded in 1910, tradition remains a consistent part of the Delamere golf course. The original designs by Herbert Fowler have remained untouched and full advantage has been made of the natural, severely-undulating contours of the heathland course and surrounding ancient woodland.

It’s not for the faint-hearted though, the opening 5 holes are notorious for their unforgiving, unapologetic difficulty. The 5th, in particular, is a true test of nerve, patience, accuracy and concentration. From an uphill tee shot, the approach to the green is left guarded by ponds in front of, and left of it, resulting in one of the hardest holes to play in the country.

Yards 6325, par 71.

Station Road, Delamere, Northwich, Cheshire, CW8 2JE

38 minutes from The Lion

Eaton Golf Course

Designed by Donald Steel, the celebrated golf architect, Eaton Golf Course was created as an enjoyable challenge for players of all abilities, immaculately presentated with contoured greens built to USGA standards, which are fast, firm, and true.

At 6,580 yards (par 72) for men and 5,642 yards (par 73) for women, the course offers a balanced test which will stretch the better player whilst remaining fully playable for those of more modest ability. There is also a BLACK course Par 72, SSS 73 – 6714 yards which provides a more serious challenge to low handicap golfers.

Beautifully situated beside the Shropshire Union Canal, the course features a wealth of mature oaks, a picturesque brook and several ponds and copses, all of which add to the golfing challenge and provide rich habitats for wildlife in abundance – hares, foxes, swans and now barn owls!

Guy Lane, Waverton, Chester, Cheshire, CH3 7PH

22 minutes from The Lion

Macdonald Portal Golf Club

From the stadium layout of the Portal Championship course, to the rolling tree-lined fairways of the Premier Course, Portal Golf Club presents two unique challenges for members and visitors alike.

The Championship Course opened in 1990, and was named ‘Golf Course of the Year’ in 1995. Designer Donald Steel has created a challenge that is characterised by unique and distinctive holes; expansive water hazards and cascading waterfalls are among the tests. The signature is typical of Steel’s magnificent 7,037 yard layout – the long third tips the scales at 607 yards, with a green guarded by a beautiful lake.

The 6538 yard Premier Course, also opened in 1990 offers dramatic natural undulations of the Cheshire sandstone ridge means each hole has a distinct and unique character, providing eighteen very individual challenges during your round.

Nestled in the tranquil Cheshire countryside is the 9 hole, 1724 yard Arderne Course. While this is the perfect environment for beginners to hone their golfing skills, it also provides a challenge for the more experienced player too. It’s picturesque water features, contoured greens and mix of holes ranging between 100 and 310 yard makes this a delightful course to spend time with friends or family.

Cobblers Cross Lane, Tarporley, Cheshire, CW6 0DJ

28 minutes from The Lion

Pryors Hayes Golf Course

Set in the picturesque Cheshire countryside, Pryors Hayes offers a challenging and enjoyable 18 hole, 6145 yar, par 70 parkland golf course. A fine test for golfers of all abilities, but you will need to be good from the tees, as accuracy is essential – the fairways are tight and undulating. On top of that, there is a whole range of natural hazards to test every aspect of your game.

Willington Road, Oscroft, Tarvin, Chester, Cheshire, CH3 8NL

31 minutes from The Lion

Carden Park Golf

Set within 1,000 acres Carden Park offers the choice of two championship golf courses; The Nicklaus and The Cheshire.

With its lush fairways, challenging bunkers, and stunning views, the Cheshire Course offers a golfing adventure that’s second to none. Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the Cheshire countryside as you enjoy a round of golf on this remarkable course.

The Nicklaus Course is a masterpiece of design by golf legend Jack Nicklaus himself. Feel the thrill of navigating through strategic water features, undulating terrain, and immaculate greens. Offering a true championship experience, the Nicklaus Course promises golfers an unforgettable golfing experience, set against the backdrop of stunning natural surroundings.

Spring is showing signs of bursting through, with new shoots and new life everywhere you look. It’s a great time to take advantage of the brighter days and head out for a wander among the blooms, before heading in for a warm bite in your local pub.

Here are our favourite flower-filled walks in Cheshire:

– Cholmondeley Castle

Opening for the season this March (10th) Cholmondeley Castle Gardens is a great spring/summer destination for a walk, with English bluebells in abundance on Tower Hill in May and wonderful orchid meadows full of pollinators in summer. There’s also a daffodil walk, rose garden, and much-photographed Temple Garden.

For those more interested in wildlife check out The Lakeside Walk and Nature Trail and The Children’s Den, complete with bug hotel and secret hideaways.

And no visit is complete without popping into The Farm Shop or Café.

  • 15 minutes by car from The Swan at Tarporley.
  • 12 minutes by car from The Lion at Malpas.

– Beeston/Peckforton

This circular walk takes in both Beeston and Peckforton Castles, a section of The Sandstone Trail and woodland paths. Whilst we love this woodland walk we also love the views and taking in the glimpses of the two castles, perched above the Cheshire Plains.

  • 11 minutes by car from The Swan at Tarporley
  • 18 minutes by care from The Lion at Malpas

– Rode Hall

Rode Hall is the best place for snowdrops, with a designated mile-long Snowdrop Walk, one of the best displays in the Northwest. From April onwards the Grade II listed park and gardens open, offering displays of daffodils, bluebells and fragrant lily of the valley, a small Italian garden and kitchen garden.

  • 50 minutes by car from The Lion at Malpas
  • 45 minutes by car from The Swan at Tarporley

– Bodnook Wood

One of our favourite places to appreciate the blooming bluebells is Bodnook Wood, just below Raw Head on the Sandstone Trail. This can be part of a great circular walk from Harthill and Bulkeley, part of your Sandstone Trail experience or a destination wander. The flowers are at their best in April and May, carpeting the ancient woodland.

  • 18 minutes by car from The Swan at Tarporley
  • 15 minutes by car from The Lion at Malpas

As the autumn leaves fall and the air turns crisp, we’re embracing the Halloween spirit here at The Lion. As Halloween approaches, our staff have been sharing their own spine-tingling tales, and discussing their favourite Halloween events in Cheshire to help us celebrate spooky season as best we can. Get involved with us!

In this blog, we decided to delve into the eerie and supernatural, with spooky stories about Cheshire, along with scary (yet thrilling) events to attend this Halloween.

And, if you’re in need of some comfort after getting your spook on, know that we’re here to welcome you with warm drinks, delicious food, and our friendly staff to chase away those chills!

Spooky Tales of Cheshire

The Haunted Battle of Rowton Moor

Did you know Cheshire holds its own haunted battlefield, where the Battle of Rowton Moor unfolded back in 1645? Picture this: King Charles I gazing from the Phoenix Tower, witnessing his Royalist Cavalry meeting a grim fate at the hands of the Parliamentarians. On the anniversary of this battle, some have claimed to see the ghost of Lord Bernard Stewart, a Royalist cavalry leader, on horseback. You may also hear distant music, believed to be played by King Charles’ court musician, William Lawes, who met his end on this very battlefield. Spooky!

Ghostly Encounters at Tatton Hall

Tatton Hall, a 15th-century manor house, is renowned for more than its deer and flower shows. It’s also a hotspot for ghostly encounters. Many visitors have acclaimed to hear heavy footsteps and sinister shuffling sounds, accompanied by a menacing, shadowy presence Temperature changes are enough to send shivers down your spine, and some have been too frightened to re-enter the building!

Hack Green’s Paranormal Mystery

Hack Green’s “secret” nuclear bunker is not just a historical site; it’s also shrouded in paranormal activity. Stories and sightings include a full apparition of a man dressed in uniform walking down the bunker’s main corridor. There have also been two other similar incidents reported in the same corridor and staff say that there is a very menacing feel to the place.

In room 9, which is a telecommunications area, the spirit of an attractive young woman is often spotted working away at her desk by visitors. Also telephones which are disconnected are often heard to start ringing.

If you find yourself unsettled by these ghostly accounts, remember that The Lion is a place of warmth and hospitality, ready to chase away those spirits with our friendly ambiance and hearty offerings (and some of the more fun kinds of spirits behind the bar!).

Halloween Events in Cheshire

If you’re planning a trip to The Lion over the spooky season, here’s our team’s top picks of Halloween evens in Cheshire this year.

Gandeys Spooky Circus at Bolesworth

If you’re looking for a thrilling Halloween event with a little scare factor, then get ready for a fang-tastic Halloween at Gandeys Spooky Circus in Bolesworth. This hair-raising spectacle features internationally trained circus artists, spooky skeleton dancers, vampires, and jack-o-lanterns. The circus Ringmaster keeps everything in order while a mischievous clown adds to the excitement.

If you’re making a weekend of frightfully fun filled activities, were just a stone’s throw away from all the Halloween havoc, so why not book yourself a safe place to stay from all those ghouls and ghosts?

Chester Ghost Tour

If you want to slip away from a more relaxing approach into a scary Halloween special, why not try the Chester Ghost Tours? Steeped in 2000 years of history, and with hundreds of Ghost sightings, Chester can claim to be one of the most haunted cities in Britain. For a night-time journey through the mysterious and murky past of Chester, expect chilling tales of ghosts, ghouls, and things that go bump in the night. These tours take you to the eeriest haunts in the city, and they run throughout the spooky season.

The pandemic helped us Brits to fall back in love with the summer staycation, a long-forgotten concept that had been lost amidst our decades-long love affair with Mediterranean cuisine, Balearic seas and French vineyards.

Our desire to leave these shores in pursuit of foreign climes was curtailed back in 2020, with COVID rendering foreign holidays near impossible. However, this inconvenience really helped Britons to rediscover the hidden gems and beauty spots that exist here in the UK.

Since then, we’ve seen a significant rise in demand for summer staycations, particularly ones that encompass ‘slow living’, giving holidaymakers the chance to recharge the batteries and truly relax.

In our latest blog we’ll explain how you can enjoy your very own slow summer staycation here at the Lion.

What Is Slow Living?

Slow living and therefore, taking a slow summer staycation, means holidaying without the pressure of needing to fill every second of your time. There’s a charm to visiting the countryside for a few days to simply escape the hustle and bustle of life. Reconnect with nature or simply chill out, have a lazy morning or spend the day eating and drinking great food. Slow summer staycations can really give you the break you need – as you don’t need to come back off holiday feeling more wiped out than you did before!

This can all be achieved at The Lion thanks to the versatility of our rooms, our bedrooms being on the same site as our award-winning pub, and our ideal spot in the countryside that’s simply perfect on hazy summer days.

Stay at The Lion

Nestled in the southwestern corner of Cheshire, The Lion has been at the centre of the peaceful Malpas community for over three centuries and provides a truly great British bed and breakfast experience for your staycation.

The Tudor Cottage

Just a short walk from our warm and inviting pub on the courtyard, lies our gorgeous black-and-white three-bedroom Tudor Cottage where you can stay in luxurious surroundings that exude comfort and style.

Here, you can enjoy a warm and cosy living area that comes complete with a crackling log fire, enjoy some games and laughs with family or friends, and get a relaxing night’s sleep in the three en-suite bedrooms upstairs.

Being just a few steps from the main pub means you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner if you so wish all at The Lion, you don’t even have to leave the site if you don’t want to!

Start your day with a Lion breakfast

After a relaxing night’s sleep, why not head over to the pub to indulge in a delightful breakfast? For those who are particularly peckish, we have The Cheshire Breakfast.

This feast will certainly set you up for the day and comes with local pork sausage, grilled back bacon, black pudding, roasted tomato, Portobello mushroom, hash brown, baked beans and a fried egg with toast and butter

We also have a veggie option that includes Glamorgan sausage, hash brown, roasted tomatoes, Portobello mushroom, baked beans, fried egg with toast and butter

If you’re looking for something a little lighter to start your day with, you can try our Eggs Benedict on sourdough bread, a bowl of Porridge served with our local Cheshire Honey or berry compote, or maybe a toasted sausage sandwich.

Relax with a drink from our bar

While you’re on your slow staycation with us, you can also enjoy a wide selection of drinks here at The Lion, from cocktails and seasonal wines to local cask ales.

In terms of the draught beer customers have a diverse range to choose from with a mixture of local cask ales including Weetwood Ales and premium beers such as Guinness and Moretti on draught.

We also take our wines seriously here at The Lion and we’re constantly on the lookout for the best and most brilliant bottles to serve at the bar. We even partner with our very own wine expert to bring you the very best options for every season.

From crisp Sauvignon Blancs to fruity Verdejos, we have an extensive wine menu that changes regularly to offer customers a range of seasonal favourites.

Meanwhile, if you’re after a refreshing cocktail our talented bar staff will be on hand to fix you up with a dazzling daquiri or a magnificent mojito.

Things to do on your staycation

As part of your slow staycation at The Lion, why not enjoy an easier day out at some of Cheshire’s best-loved attractions? From a simple stroll around Cholmondeley Castle to indulging in an icy sweet treat at the Ice Cream Farm, there’s so much to see and do nearby without feeling as though your holiday is passing you by at 100mph.

Cholmondeley Castle

Situated in the heart of the magnificent Cheshire countryside, just 10 minutes from The Lion is Cholmondeley Castle, the home of the Cholmondeley family since the 12th century.

At Cholmondeley, you can roam through 70 acres of glorious gardens that are adorned with magnificent displays that change with the seasons and filled with magnificent botanical delights.

A slow stroll around the castle, the cricket ground and its stupendous gardens truly is the perfect way to switch off and simply enjoy our amazing natural world.

Sandstone Trail

The Sandstone Trail is the ruby-like jewel in the North West’s crown when it comes to walking routes. The 34-mile-long ramble is the perfect way to take in the beauty of central Cheshire and the surrounding area.

Split into different sections, the trail itself runs just past the village of Malpas and is one of the best walking routes in the UK, filled with pubs, cafés, and other charming stop-off points.

If you fancy a gentle, easy afternoon walk along the local section of the trail, you can enjoy a pleasant stroll round the beautiful village of Bickerton, that takes you on a forgiving circular route up the hill past Maiden Castle and back down a quiet country lane back to where you started.

Ice Cream Farm

Around 20 minutes north of The Lion, you’ll find the magical world of the Ice Cream Farm, a paradise for lovers of fun and an icy sweet treat.

The Ice Cream Farm has all you need to enjoy a great day out, where you can embrace your inner Lewis Hamilton round the go-karting track and indulge in the most delicious ice creams that are made just next door.

With over 50 flavours of ice cream to choose from at the world’s largest ice cream shop, you’re sure to be spoilt for choice. Whether you prefer traditional flavours like strawberry or prefer something new like Jammy Dodger flavour, there’s something for everyone.

So, if you’re planning a relaxing, slow Cheshire staycation, make sure you book in at The Lion to enjoy a truly indulgent and tranquil break!

The late British wine critic Michael Broadbent believed that: “Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life’s most civilised pleasures.”

At The Lion, this is a doctrine that we certainly subscribe to, and we aim to provide our customers with the perfect setting to enjoy our delicious wines, as well as great food in the company of friends and family.

We take our wines seriously here at The Lion and we’re constantly on the lookout for the best and most brilliant bottles to serve at the bar. We even partner with our very own wine expert to bring you the very best options for every season.

From crisp Sauvignon Blancs to fruity Verdejos, in our latest blog, we’ll be taking a look at our extensive wine menu and exploring our team’s favourite whites and rosés from across the world.

How we choose our wines at The Lion

At The Lion, we do our utmost to make sure that our customers are able to choose from a wide selection of the very best wines, either for an evening drink or to complement the array of dishes available in the restaurant.

The wine menu changes regularly in order to give customers a broader range of choice and is tailored to align with seasonal changes, which allows certain wines to be brought to the fore.

This menu is curated in collaboration with a leading Cheshire-based wine expert, John from DeFINE Wine who advises us on any bottles that may be trending or seasonal favourites, which helps us to bring the most up to date options to customers.

Our wine menu includes a variety of wonderful whites and resplendent rosés which means we can cater to all preferences and accommodate different tastes to ensure that there is something for everyone.

White wine favourites

Bella Modella Pinot Grigio, Italy

This light and crisp Italian pinot grigio is the perfect wine to enjoy in our outdoor patio area on a beautiful summer’s evening as you watch the sun slowly set.

A zesty white with notes of green apple, the Bella Modella’s moderate level of acidity makes it cool and refreshing and perfect for any palate, which is why our team love it. This particular pinot pairs superbly with light chicken and our pasta dishes.

Vidal Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand

This kiwi wine enjoys legendary status here at The Lion and was sorely missed on our menu in late 2021 and 2022 following a frost-ravaged harvest in the autumn of 2021.

Fortunately, it’s made a welcome return to our wine menu, with customers once again able to enjoy this classic Marlborough-style Sauvignon Blanc. The Vidal possesses a rich flavour with aromas of passionfruit, citrus and fresh herbs.

This best-selling wine pairs perfectly with our seafood dishes and can be enjoyed all year round.

Clea Verdejo, Spain

It may be new to our wine menu, but this Spanish wine is quickly becoming a firm favourite among our customers who are loving its full-bodied and aromatic flavour.

Native to the village of Rueda in rural northern Spain, the Clea Verdejo is best enjoyed while its young and no longer than 3-4 years after it’s been bottled. The Spanish white has a bright and fresh acidity with cut grass, citrus and balsamic notes, which is followed by an aniseed aftertaste.

Interestingly, the Verdejo grapes are harvested at night to control the temperature and ensure optimal taste.

Rosé wine

Burlesque White Zinfandel, California

We love the fact that so many of our customers have a real sweet tooth and those in possession of one certainly love to indulge in our gorgeous California White Zinfandel.

Selected from the vineyards of the Lodi region of California, this rosé is essentially a luscious, melted strawberry ice cream in a glass, complemented by bright, berry fruited aromas and a slightly off-dry finish.

This lovely wine pairs particularly well with our cheese and biscuits, which includes local cheddar and brie.

Chateau Saint Pierre Rosé, Provence

A light and fragrant rosé originating from the beautiful southern French region of Provence, close to the Italian border and the stunning Cote d’Azur.

A typical Provence rosé, this wine offers gorgeous aromas of white peach and spice, with hints of tropical fruits and a fullness that’s both elegant and refreshing in equal measure.

Its Mediterranean roots makes it the perfect accompaniment to seafood-based dishes such as our magnificent Seabass with spring vegetable and Josper roasted potatoes.

If you’re looking to treat yourself to one of these delicious wines, then why not book a table for drinks with us today?!
